Kesha Has Advice For Anyone Dealing With Mental Illness This Holiday Season

"It’s not your responsibility to try to make the whole world happy."

Kesha understands from experience how difficult the holiday season can be for those struggling with a mental illness such as anxiety, depression, or addiction. In a new essay for Time magazine's partnership with Sheryl Sandberg's initiative Option B, the singer shares comforting words for anyone who's struggling this time of year.

"In so many ways, the holidays can throw you off your game — and that can shake you," Kesha writes in the piece. "When you have a routine, it's easier to manage whatever mental struggles you may be faced with, and when that routine is broken, it can trigger things you may not be ready to face."


The 30-year-old singer, who earlier this year debuted the emotional single "Praying" and new album Rainbow, recalls that it was during the holidays when she "hit a low moment" and chose to seek help for her eating disorder. During a season focused on giving to others, it can be easy to feel pressured or guilty, but Kesha shares a mantra she developed to deal with it all: "It's not selfish to take time for yourself."

She even offers suggestions for self-care, from taking walks or using meditation apps, to simply talking with a friend. She reminds readers that it's perfectly fine to take time for yourself and skip some gatherings if you don't feel up to attending. "Just do whatever helps you calm down and gives you a break from the stress," she writes, adding, "It's not your responsibility to try to make the whole world happy."

Kesha has been open about her struggles in recent years — from her eating disorder to her legal battle with producer Dr. Luke, whom she accused of sexual abuse. Around the release of "Praying," she penned an essay for Lenny Letter in which she wrote, "I have channeled my feelings of severe hopelessness and depression, I've overcome obstacles, and I have found strength in myself even when it felt out of reach."

Later, she shared words of encouragement with fans in another essay for Refinery29. "I am a walking testament to anyone out there that with honesty and self-love, you can feel whole again," she wrote. "No matter what you have been through, even if things feel unfair and hurt your soul, it does not have to define who you are. You can be the person you want to be today."

Kesha ends her Time piece by sharing that she herself is dealing with the loss of a family member this season, and shares her solidarity with others going through a difficult time, reminding everyone to "give yourself a break."
