Joe Biden Launches Campaign Promoting Family Acceptance Of LGBTQ Youth

“We’ll use our resources to highlight the harms of family rejection," Biden said.

Former vice president Joe Biden launched the "As You Are" initiative in an effort to advocate for LGBTQ young people who face family rejection.

The campaign video below states that LGBTQ youth are five times more likely than their straight peers to attempt suicide and family rejection contributes to that increase.

"I'm proud to announce that the Biden Foundation launched a family acceptance campaign," Biden explained in the campaign video. "We'll use our resources to highlight the harms of family rejection, and to lift up research, best practices, and personal stories to show the importance of family acceptance."

In partnership with NFL player Wade Davis and singer Cyndi Lauper, the social media campaign asked people to share their stories to help raise awareness about how family rejection can negatively impact  LGBTQ youth.

"Many of them have been kicked out of their homes or no longer find it safe to stay in their homes," Lauper said in the video.

The campaign website asks people of the LGBTQ community along with their family members and allies to submit their stories with the hope that it would encourage and uplift other people.

"Stories have power. In the past decade, we've seen storytelling drive nationwide progress for LGBTQ equality," the campaign website states.  "But far too many LGBTQ people—especially those under 25—still face rejection from the people closest to them. So we're inviting you to help us change that."

Biden has been a long-time advocate for the LGBTQ community. In May, the  Biden Foundation launched a program with the YMCA to advocate for LGBTQ equality.

"Every American deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, but too many in the LGBTQ community are denied this basic human right today," Biden told CNN. "This is unacceptable in a country founded on the belief that we all are created equal."
