Jimmy Kimmel And Ted Cruz Took Their Rivalry To The Basketball Court For A Good Cause

Who won the Blobfish Basketball Classic?

It's no secret that Sen. Ted Cruz and Jimmy Kimmel don't always see eye to eye, but over the weekend, they put their rivalry to good use by playing a one-on-one basketball game at Texas Southern University, to benefit two local charities.

It all started last month when Kimmel compared Cruz to a blobfish on his show. The Republican senator responded on Twitter by suggesting they "settle this man-to-man" in a basketball game, with the loser giving $5,000 to a non-political charity of the winner's choosing.

On Saturday, the game — appropriately named the "Blobfish Basketball Classic" — became a reality. The pair reportedly played for two hours, eventually deciding the cut the game short at 11 points instead of 15.

The Houston Chronicle described the match as "a slow-motion car-crash of half-court basketball," while Kimmel himself reportedly said, "We apologize to the game of basketball." In the end, Cruz emerged victorious, beating the host 11-9.

The charities chosen by Kimmel and Cruz are Texas Children's Hospital and Generation One, respectively. However, Jimmy Kimmel Live! posted fundraisers for both charities on the show's Facebook page. As of this writing, the show has raised more than $13,000 for Texas Children's, and over $6,000 for Generation One.

Texas Children's Hospital, located in Houston, has been ranked among the best children's hospitals in the country, while Generation One aims to "break the cycle of poverty" in the Third Ward of Houston through early childhood education.

Cruz may have earned the most points, but he made it clear on Twitter after the game that the real winners were the charities involved. Kimmel tweeted his agreement, calling them "two great charities run by great people."

In a time of political divide, it's heartening to see two people who disagree come together for a common good — and a bit of fun. We look forward to witnessing how it all went down when Kimmel shares the highlights on tonight's show, at 11:35 p.m. Eastern Time on ABC.
