Over $20,000 Raised As Thank You For Local Meteorologist’s Reliable Reporting During Harvey

Houston wants to send Jeff Lindner on a well-deserved vacation.

Jeff Lindner, the Harris County Flood Control District meteorologist, has been working some long days recently. Since Hurricane Harvey hit Texas last week, Lindner has been updating residents via news conferences and Twitter updates about the water levels in Houston and the surrounding areas. His tweets about flooded roads and responses to worried Texans have extended late into the night, and he admitted on Twitter this weekend that the last night he had a decent night's sleep was Aug. 22.

"I had a hard time sleeping with knowing the potential rapid intensification in the NW Gulf. A lot had to be done," he wrote.

His dedication, which Lindner told the Wall Street Journal he saw as just a part of his job, has not gone unnoticed. A GoFundMe titled "Let's Buy Jeff Lindner a Vacation" was set up Aug 31, and as of publication, has raised over $20,000.

"Jeff Lindner has proved an invaluable resource," the description on the campaign's page reads. "He has provided us with a calm, analytical, and composed presence during an incredibly fluid and complicated situation: never once looking uncertain or overwhelmed while discussing planned releases and changing water levels. Tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people were able to make smarter, more informed decisions about them and their families safety because of Jeff and his determinations."

When Lindner heard about the campaign he was surprised.

"I just feel like I was doing my job," he told the Journal. "I'm going to keep doing it."

Lindner has asked that his "vacation fund" be turned into a charitable fund for those who were affected by the hurricane. The campaign will remain open through the next week before Lindner helps distribute the money to organizations and shelters.

"I am one of those flooded by the reservoirs - the sun came out and then the water came in," one donor wrote on the GoFundMe page. "Jeff's calm, collected, honest, transparent manner became the most trustworthy voice of this disaster, and I relied on him throughout the event. I really think he has earned this vacation, and am glad to contribute to it."
