When Jane Goodall Heard That Ivanka Trump Had Quoted Her, She Had One Request

"What you do makes a difference."

Ivanka Trump's new book Women Who Work includes several inspirational quotes from influential people. That includes one from Dr. Jane Goodall, the legendary British primatologist and founder of the conservation organization the Jane Goodall Institute.

"What you do makes a difference," Goodall's quote reads, "and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make."

Goodall was not aware ahead of time that Ms. Trump planned to include her quote, but she has now chosen to expand upon the message by making a request of the first daughter as it relates to President Donald Trump's stance on environmental issues.

"I sincerely hope she will take the full import of my words to heart," Goodall told CNN this week. "She is in a position to do much good or terrible harm."

Ivanka Trump has received criticism for her role in the Trump administration. Earlier this year, she was given an office in the White House and the title of "assistant to the president" — although she reportedly receives no salary. Some have even called Ms. Trump "complicit" in her father's controversial policies.

Goodall, who is a Messenger of Peace for the United Nations, seems to hope Ms. Trump will push back against actions that could put important environmental legislation at risk.

"Legislation that was passed by previous governments to protect wildlife such as the Endangered Species Act, create national monuments, and other clean air and water legislation have all been jeopardized by this administration," Goodall told CNN. "I hope that Ms. Trump will stand with us to value and cherish our natural world and protect this planet for future generations."

It's not the first time the first daughter has received such a request. Environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio reportedly delivered a copy of his climate change documentary Before the Flood to Ms. Trump before her father took office.
