Iskra Lawrence Strips In A New York City Subway To Make An Important Point About Loving Your Body

“Every single one of us has so much value and so much worth that is so much more than just skin."

Model Behavior is a series highlighting fashion models promoting body positivity, and working to create inclusivity and diversity within the industry by expanding our definition of conventional beauty.

When it comes to advancing more inclusion and diversity in the fashion industry, model Iskra Lawrence is among the most talked-about advocates in the past year. The 26-year-old role model for Aerie has promoted body positivity by participating in the Show Your Spark campaign, walking the runway at New York Fashion Week, and intentionally photoshopping her own picture to call out unrealistic beauty standards.

Recently, Lawrence spoke out about the need for more body positivity on a New York City subway — and she did so by stripped down on the train.

The video, which was part of the #UNMUTED series, begins with Lawrence addressing a crowd on a subway. According to the YouTube description, the series was created as a response to the 2016 election results so that people can learn from each other and be more open-minded.

"I want to make myself vulnerable today so that you can see truly the journey I've come on with my own body and how I feel about myself today," Lawrence said as she removed her dress. "So I'm going to reveal myself to you to prove that we are in control about how we feel about ourselves. No one else holds our self-worth but us."

In her speech, Lawrence described how she did not appreciate her own body while growing up because of disturbing beauty standards propagated by society. Lawrence said that she eventually realized our bodies are not meant to be objectified, but rather respected and celebrated.

"I really hope by sharing this with you today that you are going to see yourself differently," Lawrence told the passengers on the subway. "Every single one of us has so much value and so much worth that is so much more than just skin. We are all brothers and sisters. We are all equal. This is just our vessel."

She concluded her powerful speech with a special plea for everyone to follow.

"Look at your body and see why we appreciate it," she said. "Start talking to yourself, celebrating who you are and respecting that. Because we can change how we view ourselves, we can change by being nonjudgmental to others and we can grow this beautiful relationship we have with ourselves."

The passengers on the train applauded Lawrence for her inspiring words. As of Monday, the video received over 9,000 views.
