But it's hard to even imagine what it must be like to do it in space.

The European Space Agency recently released a video of ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti explaining how the International Space Station toilet works. Cristoforetti gives step-by-step instructions on what needs to be done.

So, for example, for liquid waste, this is how you begin.

Which might seem like a lot at first. Particularly in space.

Here's another cool fact about the space toilet: the passengers' urine is recycled into water for them to drink. Yep.
