People Are Painting Their Faces To Show What Mental Illness Can Actually Feel Like

#InsideOutChallenge

When beauty blogger Yasaman Ghedi had to leave a work party early because of an anxiety attack, she was worried her co-workers would ask her questions about her exit. She asked her partner how she should handle these questions and was quickly advised to say she just had a headache.

In an Instagram post, Ghedi shared a photo of herself with one side of her face done up in everyday makeup, while the other was painted blue with painted black tears streaming down it. She captioned the post with an explanation of why she was hesitant to use a made-up excuse on her co-workers.

"Why did I have to be ashamed and lie about my anxiety attack? So many wonderful and amazing people suffer from the same mental illnesses that I do on a daily basis," she wrote. "Why can't we just talk about it openly? This experience along with many others inspired my "Inside Out Challenge." Mental illness shouldn't have to be hidden away, let's start to talk about it."

Many people were moved by her story and were inspired to join her challenge. Using the hashtag #InsideOutChallenge, people painted their faces to show what their mental disorders can feel like and shared their personal stories living with the conditions in the captions. The challenge serves as a reminder that we can help to fight stigmas associated with mental illness by sharing personal struggles and educating others in the process.
