Homer and Marge Simpson Are Legally Separating. Is Love Officially Dead?

Trouble hits paradise in 'The Simpsons.'

Twenty-six years is a long time to be married. Especially when you, your spouse, and your kids don't age a day over that whole time frame. After 576 episodes, America's favorite (cartoon) couple, Homer and Marge Simpson, will "legally separate," says The Simpsons producer Al Jean.

The premiere of the show's 27th season apparently details after all this time that Homer has narcolepsy and "it's an incredible strain on the marriage," according to Jean. After the split, Homer falls in love with his pharmacist, voiced by none other than Lena Dunham. The rest of the key women from HBO's Girls are also set to make cameos. If they're anything like their personalities on Dunham's show, the characters will probably maximize their screen time making traditional millennial remarks and questionable life decisions.

Frankly, you have to respect the resolve of a woman like Marge, given the nightmares Homer puts her through on a daily basis. Although this won't be the first time they've had marital issues or even a break of sorts, clearly the writers realized it might be time to really shake their household up a bit. There's of course the strong possibility that they'll be reunited by the end of the episode, but it's TV, so we can have a little fun speculating which directions the newly single Homer and Marge will head, if only for a 22-minute episode.

It all probably starts something like this.

Then Marge finally turns the cheek.

At first Homer's all smiles when he meets his new girlfriend, Lena Dunham.

Then Marge finds a new boyfriend of her own. Poor Bart.

Homer finds out and panics. He feels like his head might explode.

Homer realizes what he's lost, throwing himself at Marge's feet. And flowers.

He's also made an effort to take care of his body, finally.

Soon enough, they're back to their norm, nude antics and Homer's flab altogether.

It's a weird marriage. But it works.
