Hillary Clinton Retweeting Bernie Sanders Was A Moment Of Bittersweet Unity Against Racism

There are some things that trump political differences.

Politics is never pretty, and this year's presidential election has showed us some of its ugliest sides. But there was a precious moment of unity between the two Democratic rivals on social media, when Hillary Clinton retweeted Bernie Sanders' comment on Donald Trump's KKK controversy.

It started when Trump, the Republican frontrunner, was publicly endorsed by former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan David Duke. Although having cavalierly disavowed Duke when asked about the endorsement at a press conference days before, Trump did not do so during an on-air interview with CNN news anchor Jake Tapper.

Instead, the businessman-turned-politician insisted he did not know who Duke was — despite expressing his disapproval of Duke in 2000 after deciding not to run for president in the Reform Party that year — and failed to respond to the question of whether he would distance himself from the KKK.

"I don't know anything about what you're even talking about with white supremacy or white supremacists," he told Tapper. "So I don't know. I don't know — did he endorse me, or what's going on? Because I know nothing about David Duke; I know nothing about white supremacists."

Trump's response in the interview — which he later blamed on a "faulty earpiece" — was roundly condemned by many, including Sanders who tweeted this:

Sanders' comment was then retweeted by none other than Clinton herself.

It was a bittersweet moment of unity in this charged political climate.

And Clinton and Sanders aren't the only ones. Republican politicians like Mitt Romney, as well as his party rivals, have spoken out against Trump's refusal to disavow Duke and the KKK.

GOP candidate Marco Rubio said at a rally later: "How are we going to grow our party with a nominee that refuses to condemn the Ku Klux Klan?"
