Hear The 'Hamilton' Cast's Important Request For Vice President-Elect Mike Pence

"We are the diverse America."

Vice President-elect Mike Pence attended Friday night's performance of Hamilton on Broadway. After the show, as Pence was on his way out, actor Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, read a prepared message aloud on behalf of the musical. The statement featured a powerful request for Pence and President-elect Donald Trump.

Pence's appearance at the show was met with boos from several members of the audience, which Dixon discouraged. "There's nothing to boo here," he told them. "We're all here sharing a story of love."

Dixon thanked Pence for attending the musical, and shared the following message, which Pence reportedly waited in the hallway to hear:

"We are the diverse America, who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us. All of us."

Throughout his campaign for president, Donald Trump proposed discriminatory policies against various groups, including Mexican immigrants and Muslims. Pence, meanwhile, has a history of anti-LGBT and anti-choice stances.

As Dixon pointed out in the show's statement, Hamilton is performed by "a diverse group of men, women, of different colors, creeds and orientations." During Friday's performance, the audience reportedly applauded at certain relevant lyrics, and even gave a standing ovation at the line "Immigrants, we get the job done."

Donald Trump tweeted his offense over the cast's statement this weekend, demanding an apology for what he called "terrible behavior." Pence, however, says he was not offended by the show's message or the audience's boos. "When we arrived we heard a few boos, and we heard some cheers," he told Fox News. "I nudged my kids and reminded them that is what freedom sounds like."
