These Cops Surprised Drivers With Ice Cream Cones Instead of Tickets

A new way of serving the community.

A video of a woman getting pulled over by the police in Halifax, Va. is showing a refreshing side to law enforcement that we sometimes don't see.

Police Chief Kevin Lands recorded the video as Officer Brian Warner spoke to the woman driving the car.

"Are you aware why I pulled you over today?" Warner asks in the video.

"No, sir," the driver responds.

Officer Warner then asks if she is "familiar with vehicle code 1739," but she's never heard of it.

"It's actually against the law to drive on a hot day without an ice cream cone," Warner said.

The woman and her passenger burst into laughter as Warner hands them two ice cream cones.

"On behalf of the Halifax Police Department, we're just making sure that everybody's following all of the laws today and are driving with ice cream cones," Warner said. "We just want to make sure you guys were in compliance."

The driver thanked the officers and they exchanged handshakes. As of Tuesday, the Facebook video has received over 6.4 million views.

"Her reaction was absolutely the best," Warner told local Virginia-based television station WSET. "That's one of the great things with police work — you get to meet people like that on a daily basis, and it makes the job worth it."

Lands and Warner surprised about 20 drivers that day by dishing out delicious ice cream. It was part of the Fairfax Police Department's plan to develop better relations with the community.

"We just wanted to put smiles on some people's faces that day," Lands wrote to A Plus. "The reaction to the video and it going viral has been amazing. We're humbled with all the kind comments that have been made."

Lands also told A Plus that the Halifax Police Department loves its community and its officers are just happy to serve.

Taking The Lede is an A Plus original series featuring ordinary people who quietly do extraordinary things. We believe these unsung heroes deserve their place in the headlines.
