Google Celebrates International Women's Day With Stories From Diverse Female Artists

"We wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate ... another group of extraordinary women."

To celebrate International Women's Day today, Google Doodle is featuring interactive works from 12 female artists from 12 different countries. Each Doodle represents a personal moment, person, or event that impacted the lives of the women who drew them. The women's stories have also been translated in more than 80 languages, according to Google.

"Those familiar with Doodles know that we frequently celebrate extraordinary women throughout history such as prominent inventors, scientists, writers, artists, activists, philanthropists, and so on," members of the Google Doodle team wrote in a statement. "Today, we wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate the stories and voices of another group of extraordinary women — the everyday women living all over the world."

The contributing artists included: Anna Haifisch from Germany, Chihiro Takeuchi from Japan, Estelí Meza from Mexico, Francesca Sanna from Italy and Switzerland, Isuri Merenchi Hewage from Sri Lanka, Karabo Poppy Moletsane from South Africa, Kaveri Gopalakrishnan from India, Laerte from Brazil, Philippa Rice from the U.K., Saffa Khan from Pakistan and the U.K., Tillie Walden from the U.S., and Tunalaya Dunn from Thailand.

"While each artist tells a unique story, the themes are universal, reminding us of how much we often have in common. We hope that the combined power of words and images help bring these stories to life in a way that invokes feelings of understanding, empathy, and spirit of the day," the Google Doodle team wrote about the project. "This project has been an incredible journey for us, and we've been moved by the candor, intimacy, and bravery of our contributors' stories."

In addition to the doodles featured on the homepage today, Google is encouraging women across the world to share their own personal stories for International Women's Day using the hashtag #HerStoryOurStory.

You can view all of the 12 illustrations all day today on Google, but below are a few of our favorites.
