Here's How One Hair Salon Is Empowering Women Who Are Victims Of Domestic Abuse

“They leave here knowing that they can succeed.”

There was a time when Vanessa Howard struggled with getting on her feet. But these days, she's using her success to help other women in similar situations.

Howard is the founder of The Giving Hands Foundation, a nonprofit that provides free makeovers once a month for women who are dealing with issues in their lives such as domestic violence, homelessness, and cancer. It all takes place at Howard's salon, The Giving Hands Beauty Salon in Tampa, Fla.

A new 60 Second Docs video take a look at how Howard's organization uses pampering time to help empower women who are in difficult situations in their lives.

"These women come in here broken and they leave here feeling loved," Howard said in the video. "They leave here knowing that they can succeed."

Although Howard runs her own business, she believes her true success comes from the changes she sees in the lives of the women she helps out.

"When I see the women are really touched by what we do here, it really takes me back to when I was homeless, dealing with domestic violence, dealing with suicide," she said. "It makes me feel overjoyed to know that my pain had so much purpose."
