Child With Down Syndrome Wins Gerber Baby Contest For The First Time

Isn't he just the cutest?!

Gerber just welcomed a new baby to its family, and the nation is celebrating.

In their quest for the 2018 Gerber Baby, the brand set out on a photo search, collecting over 140,000 entries, Today reported.

The winner? Lucas Warren, a 1-year-old from Georgia.

Lucas is also the first child with Down syndrome — the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition  — to win the title since Gerber Baby contests started in 2010. During a television segment with Today, Lucas's mother, Cortney Warren, tells the outlet that Lucas's warm smile is what motivated the family to submit his photo to the contest. The family couldn't believe they'd won.

Lucas's father, Jason, also said they plan on putting their prize money towards their son's education.

"As a father, seeing your child exceed in life, [going] to school is something I've been looking forward to [for him]," he added. "I want him to look back and say, 'I was the Gerber Baby. Look at everything I did.' "

"We're hoping this will impact everyone — that it will shed a little bit of light on the special needs community and help more individuals with special needs be accepted and not limited," Lucas's dad, Jason Warren, told Today. "They have the potential to change the world, just like everybody else."

"Every year, we choose the baby who best exemplifies Gerber's longstanding heritage of recognizing that every baby is a Gerber baby, and this year, Lucas is the perfect fit," Bill Partyka, the president and CEO of Gerber, said, according to USA Today.

Since sharing the news to Instagram, people have flooded Gerber's comments section with positivity.

"Inclusion is EVERYTHING. You're setting the standard, Gerber!" one person wrote.

"As a father of a son with T21 [Down syndrome], Thank you Gerber," another said.

"Very happy for little Lucas! Thanks Gerber for making a difference!" another said.

Congratulations, Lucas!
