All Five Living Former Presidents Are Coming Together To Raise Money For Hurricane Relief

"We love you, Texas."

At a critical time for the United States, all five living former presidents have come together to launch an initiative raising money for victims of the recent hurricanes that have rocked the country.

On Thursday, former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Jimmy Carter appeared in a video shared across social media. Together, they announced the "One America Appeal," asking for donations to help with hurricane relief.

According to a press release, the appeal was initially intended to raise money for victims of Hurricane Harvey — which has displaced more than 1 million people — but will be expanded to assist those affected by Hurricane Irma. The presidents' video, which focused on relief for Texas, reportedly aired during the NFL's season opener on Thursday night, with a second video addressing both hurricanes debuting this weekend.

"Hurricane Harvey brought terrible destruction," Bill Clinton says at the start of the video, "but it also brought out the best in humanity."

"As former presidents, we want to help our fellow Americans begin to recover," Barack Obama goes on to share, before Jimmy Carter adds that "our friends in Texas, including President Bush 41 and 43, are doing just that."

"People are hurting down here," George W. Bush says, "but as one Texan put it, we've got more love in Texas than water." His father, George H.W. Bush, then adds, "We love you, Texas."

According to the press release, funds will go into a restricted account at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation, to ensure that 100 percent goes to victims. Money for Hurricane Harvey victims will be distributed to the Houston Harvey Relief Fund and the Rebuild Texas Fund.

President Trump tweeted his support for the former presidents' initiative on Thursday night.

As the New York Times points out, it's not the first time former presidents have joined together following a disaster. Clinton and the senior Bush teamed up to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, while Obama asked Clinton and George W. Bush to lead the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, which raised millions for victims of a 2010 earthquake in the country.
