6 Beauty Bummers You Can Actually Fix With Food

We're very quick to clutter our cabinets with creams and conditioners, but many of us don't realize our beauty's health begins with what we put inside our bodies. It can be a challenge to improve and keep up with your diet when your only goal is weight loss, but smaller goals such as clear skin, radiant hair, and stronger nails can happen a lot sooner.

From brittle nails to dark spots on your skin, numerous beauty bummers can be resolved by simply eating a balanced diet and making sure you get all the vitamins you need.

1. The Problem: Dry Skin

The Fix: Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Silica

Dry skin is a common issue many people face particularly in the winter months. To help keep your skin moisturized, incorporate foods like salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts. Foods rich in silica will be another weapon against dry skin. Arm yourself with oats, barley, potatoes, and red beets. If these foods don't particularly excite you, you could always take an omega-3 or silica supplement instead.

You should also make sure you're drinking enough water and avoid foods that have high salt content.

2. The Problem: Brittle nails

The Fix: Biotin

You've probably heard that biotin, also known as vitamin H, may be great for your hair, but it may also help to strengthen and grow your nails. Consuming eggs, onions, sweet potatoes, or peanuts can help you get your daily dose.

3. The Problem: Dull Hair

The Fix: Vitamin E and Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Instead of loading your hair with serums and creams, adjust your diet to have more vitamin E. It will help keep your hair looking strong, healthy, and radiant. Cooked spinach, avocados, almonds, and shrimp are loaded with vitamin E.

Healthy hair is another great reason to make sure you're getting enough omega-3 in your diet. For some other great sources, try eggs, spinach, avocados or olive oil.

4. The Problem: Under-eye circles

The Fix: Vitamin K and Iron

Under-eye circles keep you looking tired and worn out, but they can be a pain to cover up with makeup. Instead, opt for foods rich in vitamin K. Vitamin K helps to improve blood coagulation and circulation which can reduce the appearance of under-eye circles. Next time you're at the grocery store, fill your basket with kale, brussels sprouts, and swiss chard. Leafy greens not your thing? Take a vitamin K supplement each day, and you'll be in the clear.

An iron deficiency can be the cause of your under-eye circles, so you want to make sure you're getting your daily dose. Red meat and beans are great sources.

5. The Problem: Cellulite

The Fix: Vitamin C

Regardless of your weight, cellulite does not discriminate. Anyone can have it. To reduce the appearance of cellulite, look no further than foods rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C can aid in strengthening your skin's connective tissue and boost collagen in the skin. Add more bell peppers, tomatoes, and citrus fruits to your diet to help diminish those bumps and lumps.

You should also avoid eating too much salt and sugar.

6. The Problem: Acne

The Fix: Antioxidants and Zinc

We wish acne went away after your teen years, but many people aren't so lucky. The good news is that you can help reduce flare-ups by eating foods rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are great for your skin and help to reduce inflammation. Stock up on berries, beans, and artichokes.

You should also start focusing more on your zinc intake because it controls the production of oil in your body. If you're zinc deficient, try eating oysters, beef, pecans, and spinach for clearer skin.

Dairy has been linked to acne, so you may want to stay away from milk, cheese, and butter.

If eating foods that have these nutrients doesn't seem doable, you can take supplements available at your local Walgreens. Each purchase helps provide life-saving vitamins for people in need around the world through their Vitamin Angels program.
