1,000 People Were Asked What They Look For In A First Date. Here's What They Said.

For starters, refrain from talking about your ex.

First dates can be seriously uncomfortable. This is true whether you meet with four potential suitors a week with the help of dating apps, or are just about to get back into the dating game after being off the market for years. Some people you just click with right away. Others take more time to warm up to. And then there are people you just won't ever get along with.

But for those of you who have high hopes about your next first date, there might be a few things you can do to help things go a little more smoothly.

Recently, 1,000 Europeans and Americans were surveyed about their first date expectations in an effort to better understand how to have a great first date — and land a second one. The survey results were gathered by Dr. Ed, an online doctor service, and turned into infographics that show the dos and don'ts of first dates.

You can check some of them out below.

Can't decide on a place to go for your first date? Go classic with a restaurant or coffee shop.

Many men and women agree they'd rather discuss politics or religion on a first date than hear about an ex.

People have mixed feelings on who should pick up the check, so you may want to sort that out beforehand.

Want a second date? Show up clean. Eighty-four percent of women and 74 percent of men would pass on a second date if their date had poor hygiene.

And both men and women agree that a great sense of humor is an excellent reason to schedule date number two.
