This Emmy Winner Used His Acceptance Speech To Propose To His Girlfriend

"You are the sunshine in my life."

The most talked-about moment of the 2018 Emmys wasn't about who the winners were. Rather, it was about what one winner decided to do during his acceptance speech. Upon receiving the award for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, Oscars director Glenn Weiss took the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend.

Weiss said the moment was "bittersweet," as his mother passed away two weeks ago. "Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things, and she adored my girlfriend Jan," he shared. "Jan, you are the sunshine in my life. And Mom was right, don't ever let go of your sunshine."

"You wonder why I don't like to call you my girlfriend?" he continued. "Because I want to call you my wife." Weiss's girlfriend (who, according to, is named Jan Svendsen) was clearly surprised by the proposal. She joined him on stage, where he knelt and presented his mother's ring. She said yes.

Those watching from the audience and at home were amazed and overjoyed at the happy moment, and many of them tweeted about it. "The man that's gonna be with my is gonna propose to me on the Emmys," Leslie Jones said in a Twitter video reacting the speech.

According to Variety, Weiss and Svendsen spoke about their relationship backstage at the show, explaining that they met in 2001 and worked together for 10 years. Svendsen was reportedly CMO for the Tony Awards, so it was appropriate that the proposal happened at an awards show.

"I had no suspicions whatsoever, I had no idea," Svendsen said of the moment. "I really hoped he was going to dedicate the award to his mother, and he did, and then some."
