Ed Sheeran Is Celebrating A Major Milestone That Has Nothing To Do With Music

It's been one year.

In a new Instagram post, Ed Sheeran is celebrating a one-year anniversary. However, it doesn't have anything to do with his fiancée Cherry Seaborn, or his music career. Instead, the singer is marking one year since he gave up a decade-long smoking habit.

"Celebrating one year being a non smoker today," he wrote to caption a photo of himself smiling on stage and holding one finger up. Fans congratulated Sheeran in the comments.

It's been a long road for Sheeran, as many former smokers will no doubt understand. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 2 out of 3 smokers say they want to quit, and about half of them try each year. However, it's a difficult process.

According to People, the 27-year-old singer previously gave up both cigarettes and alcohol for a year in 2011 but was back to the habit in 2012. He then tried to quit "cold turkey" in 2015, telling Ellen DeGeneres that smoking had become a "routine" for him.

"I started smoking when I was younger and I'd always say, like, 'I'm gonna quit. I'm gonna quit,' " he said at the time. "And then, 'Oh well, I haven't been smoking for that long. It's been, what, four years like that …' and then when it got to 10 years, I was like, 'Oh … I'm probably getting to the point of no return here.' "

Sheeran also took a year off before releasing his most recent album, during which time he cut down on drinking. "All the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly like, substance abuse," he told talk show host Jonathan Ross last year.

We're glad to see Sheeran making these positive changes in his life. His candidness will hopefully help others who are going through similar struggles.
