Ed Sheeran Challenges The Tradition That Engagement Rings Are Just For Women

“It’s the same commitment either way.”

When fans spotted Ed Sheeran wearing a ring on his left hand during a recent concert, rumors started flying that he and his fiancée Cherry Seaborn had secretly tied the knot. However, Sheeran shot down that gossip on the red carpet of the Brit Awards this week — and challenged traditional gender roles in the process.

"It's an engagement ring," Sheeran told Sky News of the simple band. "I feel like it's good to both do things."

The 27-year-old, who recently collaborated with Eminem, also spoke to Dan Wootton of ITV's Lorraine about the ring and shared why he doesn't think the tradition should just be for women.

"I never saw why men didn't wear engagement rings," Sheeran said. "It's the same commitment either way." To make things even more special, he added that Seaborn made the ring herself "out of silver clay," adding, "I really like it. I haven't told anyone that, either."

Sheeran announced his engagement to Seaborn, whom he's known since childhood but reconnected with in 2015, this January on Instagram. He shared that they got engaged "just before the new year," adding, "We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well."

We love that Sheeran and Seaborn chose to go the unexpected route and that the singer is speaking so openly about the decision. We look forward to even more grooms-to-be possibly following Sheeran's lead by wearing engagement rings of their own.
