Father's Viral Post Shows Why We Need Changing Tables In Men's Restrooms, Too

"Let’s fix this problem!"

Despite society's drive to achieve gender equality, there are many instances where actions speak louder than words. Donte Palmer's recent Instagram post, for instance, emphasizes that, while society believes mothers shouldn't bear the brunt of the child rearing responsibilities alone, public facilities continuously fail to accommodate fathers who are simply trying to care for their kids.

Palmer's photo shows the frustrated father squatting down on the restroom floor with his toddler son stretched across his legs. Palmer's awkwardly changing the young boy's diaper as he tries to avoid making contact with the restroom floor.

"This is a serious post!!! What's the deal with not having changing tables in men's bathroom as if we don't exist!!" Palmer wrote on Instagram. "Clearly we do this often because look how comfortable my son is. It's routine to him!!!!"

"Let's fix this problem!" he added. "I Kaepernick drop a knee to this issue! Let's show the innovation of fathers!"

And many Instagram users couldn't agree more.

"This is something my husband and I encounter most of the times going out," jossmedran0 commented. "We have two small boys on diapers and I have to change both whenever we go out if there isn't a family bathroom on site. But it's impossible for him to take both boys just on a walk to the mall or what have you. This is a shame. I completely agree with you."

"Yes!! I've been saying this for so long! My husband can never do it when he's out, so he has to change her in the car!" han.davidson said.

"If a father went into the women's restroom to change his child's diaper on the changing table ... how would that play out?" felishalee wondered. "As a woman walking in to see that.. I wouldn't be mad. I would understand. But.. Would other women be mad? Would that get the establishment to get a changing table inside the men's restroom quicker!?"

"Absolutely! Kudos to you for your dedication and creativity, but you should be able to save all that for another cause," scarriest added. "I make a point to inform restaurant management that their lack of a changing station for guys is the reason I'll be going somewhere else next time. Time to fast forward from 1950..."

"Yes, awesome Dads do things like change diapers. It's a shame that today's world is not accommodating for the great Dads like you, my husband, and all the other Dads who bring it just as hard as the Moms. Changes do need to be made." cjwms1998 said.

Ashton Kutcher has also been a vocal supporter of changing tables in men's restrooms, as the birth of his first child made him realize just how insidious society's latent sexism has become.

"I would like my daughter to experience a world where gender doesn't dictate one's responsibility or limit one's opportunity," Kutcher told A Plus in 2015. "Having changing tables in men's rooms is just a tiny step in the process of rectifying legacy gender discrimination. Men who are aware of this bias want to participate equally in the child care process and our society should support that. It's time to get our hands dirty."

Yet, while former President Barack Obama signed the Bathrooms Accessible in Every Situation (BABIES) Act into law in 2016, thereby calling on all public buildings to include baby-changing stations in their bathrooms, including men's restrooms, changes have not yet become widespread.

Palmer's post clearly indicates that bathrooms across the country still lack the resources dads need. Just as we shouldn't leave women behind in the workplace, we shouldn't leave men behind when it comes to parenthood. If we, as a society, are truly dedicated to achieving gender equality, we must level the playing field in every regard.
