A Team Of Professional Swimmers Demonstrate Why Alcohol And Water Activities Don't Mix

Don't drink and dive.

Having a beer while the waves of the Pacific Ocean lap against your feet. Doesn't that sound like a perfect afternoon?

It might be, until it's not. According to the World Health Organization, alcohol consumption prior to swimming is the biggest contributing factor to water-related accidents. In the United States alone, 50 percent of drownings among adolescent boys are caused by intoxication. The numbers are only slightly lower among adults.

Sweden is another country that suffers from high rates of drowning when intoxicated. And despite the authorities making efforts to end this trend, only a behavioral change can put a definite end to it.

Trygg-Hansa, a Swedish insurance company, is determined to make that change happen with their poignant awareness campaign "Don't Drink And Dive."


According to the national estimate, more people drowned in Sweden last year than in any other country over the past decade. Most of them consumed alcohol beforehand.

To raise the public's awareness on the risks of taking a dip when intoxicated, Trygg-Hansa invited Stockholm Men’s Synchronized Swimming Team to participate in a little experiment.

All they asked was for the three-time world champions to perform their regular, winning routine — but with one small difference.

They performed drunk.

The experiment was shot over one night, starting at 7 p.m. and finishing at 3 in the morning. As you might expect, things got wild pretty quickly.

The partying swimmers were overseen by the Swedish national swimming team doctor, René Tour, who measured their alcohol levels throughout the night.

At 3 a.m. on March 29th, 10 respectable middle-aged men jumped in the pool hoping to repeat the routine they all know very well. The result? Judge for yourself.

Trygg-Hansa's video perfectly demonstrates the toll alcohol has on a person's swimming abilities and the effect it can have on their judgement.

The company also invited people to support their initiative by signing up for a summer challenge, where they would make a promise on their social accounts not to enter the water when drunk. 

36,752 people joined the #DontDrinkAndDive challenge, but we're pretty sure many more were positively influenced by the campaign and will not put their lives in danger this summer. Make sure you're one of them.
