Photographs Show Ordinary People Behind Their Military Uniforms

There's a person behind each uniform.

How does an American veteran look like?

Uniformed, with a collection of badges, always serious and alert... Or maybe wearing a short sexy dress, with a mohawk, holding a baby in their arms.

Photographer Devin Mitchell has created a powerful series titled "Soldier Project," that challenges our perception of those who serve in the U.S. military. Mitchell's photographs of men and women in front of their mirrors showcase how some military members feel like they're living a double life.

Devin found all of his subject through his Facebook page and eventually hopes to shoot 10,000 of such portraits. He wants to further explore the transition from the service to "out of the service."

"The military community has expressed their interest in using my art to communicate how many of them feel to be living double lives while serving in the military. People who have never served have shown interest in knowing more about the diversified aspects of what causes veterans to feel that way," Mitchell told Mic.

"Soldier Project" features veterans of different races, sexual orientations, gender and religious beliefs. The aim of this to challenge our societal prejudice against some of the community members.

"It is a really big deal, in my opinion, that sometimes people are denied jobs on the basis of what they look like, they are not equally considered for various opportunities, and in some jurisdictions, are good enough to serve but not good enough to qualify for equal protection under the law," Mitchell said in an interview.
