Demi Lovato's Younger Sister Posts A Touching Tribute On The Singer's Birthday

"Today could have been one of the worst days of my life."

On Monday, singer Demi Lovato celebrated her 26th birthday. The star, who was recently hospitalized for a reported drug overdose, received a particularly moving tribute from her 16-year-old half-sister Madison De La Garza, who shared how "thankful" she is to still have her.

De La Garza, an actress and YouTuber, posted an old photo on Instagram of Lovato posing with her when she was a baby. In the caption, she wrote that "today could have been one of the worst days of my life." She thanked Lovato's doctors and others who supported the singer through her difficult time, writing that "without all of these people I wouldn't have my big sister anymore."

She went on to share some of the "silly little things" she loves about her sister, "like how her nostrils move when she says certain words and when she brushes my hair behind my ear when I'm trying to sleep." She added that "those little things make up my sister - not a singer, not a celebrity, and definitely not what she's been described as in the media - she's a daughter, a friend, and my big sister..."

De La Garza ended her post by writing that she is "so, so thankful that I can tell her happy birthday." Her and Lovato's mother, Dianna De La Garza, reposted the tribute, saying she is "truly blessed."

In the past, Lovato has defended her younger sister against bullies. In 2014, when commenters made fun of De La Garza for her scoliosis, Lovato posted on Twitter, "Physical disabilities are NOTHING to joke about." The singer later told Seventeen of their relationship, "I just let her know that I'm always there for her, whether I'm on the other side of the world or I'm next door."

Earlier this month, Lovato released a statement addressing her hospitalization and struggle with addiction, telling fans, "Your positive thoughts and prayers have helped me navigate through this difficult time." She ended with a promise to "keep fighting."
