A Single Dad Learned His Teen Son Watches ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race.’ Then He Went For Help.

“Is there any advice you can give me?”

What is a father to do upon discovering his son is a RuPaul's Drag Race superfan? One single dad decided to ask Reddit for help after finding out one of his sons was a regular watcher and used it as an opportunity for him to strengthen their relationship.

The user, who goes by "dad_of_a_fan," posted in the RPDR Reddit page with a post titled "Need help with my drag fan son." In it, he wrote about how he found out his 15-year-old son — who has a tough time at school, is shy, presumably gay, and has a stutter — has been using phrases like "the shade" and "I'm gagging." He admitted to Googling the former, but still not understanding it, and being worried at first by the latter.

"Is there any advice you can give me?" he wrote. "I won't embarrass him and start quoting the show but when he said he was 'gagging' I had no idea how to react. I would like to know how to react. I was hoping I could get a crash course on this sort of chat. Any tips would be awesome and any stories or general advice would help."

Instead of the internet trolls coming out to attack, it seems "dad_of_a_fan" is getting some sincere, positive, and kind reactions from complete strangers. People have been applauding this single dad for being so accepting of his son — notably for him putting himself out there to not just accept the fact that his son watches RPDR but for him taking steps to actually understand it.

Many important conversations were brought up in these replies, with some topics including: is it OK for him to watch the show, how should he handle his son's sexuality, advice about coming out, and the best way he can always show love and support. The people who responded also got personal about their own lives, telling stories about growing up on the LGBTQ spectrum, how their parents were/weren't supportive, and giving this guy props for being a stand-up dad.

Here are just a handful of the responses:

"Dad_of_a_fan" might still be a little confused about all the RPDR lingo, which makes sense as it's a whole new world to him. That said, it seems he has aced RuPaul 101 because he reveals that his new favorite word is "hunty."

Sashay, sir, you stay.
