Skydiving Instructor Saves Student's Life After A Seizure In Midair

"Possibly the scariest moment of my life."

A near miss. It's a pretty apt description for 22-year-old Australian skydiving enthusiast Christopher Jones's heart-stopping experience on a recent jump.

Back in November, Jones was working on the fifth stage of his Accelerated Free Fall program with the Western Australia Skydiving Academy. The stage includes jumping from 12,000 feet with two professional free fall instructors.

Here you can see Jones and one of his instructors, Sheldon McFarlane, leap from the plane, completely unaware of what's about to happen.

Robin O'Neill, WA Skydiving Academy business manager and chief instructor, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that Jones was "the perfect student."

However, nothing could have prepared him for what happened seconds after the jump.

At around 9000 feet, Jones started rolling and shaking. He spent nearly 30 seconds totally unconscious while his instructor did everything trying to catch him and pull his parachute.

Apparently, Jones was struck by an epileptic seizure.

According to ABC, Jones had previously been diagnosed with epilepsy but hadn't had a seizure in four years. Due to his condition, Jones wasn't able to pursue his dream career as a pilot, but his passion for flying hasn't gone anywhere.

After getting all the required documentation from his doctor, Jones thought he was in the clear.

"I've always wanted to have the feeling of flight, so I just thought, considering I can't fly a plane due to my condition, I thought I'd give it a go," Jones told ABC.

Watch the entire video of Jones' near-death experience, which he described as "possibly the scariest moment of [his] life."

Thankfully, when he lost consciousness midair, McFarlane was able to intervene.

"Sheldon realizes and dives in like Superman and grabs me and thankfully pulls my chute and yeah, I'm here to tell the tale," Jones told CBS News of instructor's heroism.
