Chelsea Handler Speaks Tearfully About Rescuing Her Dogs And Asks Others To Do The Same

"I will never be able to say how much value dogs bring to your life."

Chelsea Handler rescued her dogs, and she wants fans to do the same. In honor of this past weekend's Clear the Shelters Day, a nationwide pet adoption drive, the comedian shared a video on Twitter talking about her experience adopting her dog Tammy, who recently passed away.

"I went into this pound, and I found the ugliest dog I could find," Handler recalled, adding that Tammy "blossomed and bloomed" and became "a different dog in six weeks."

Handler was tearful as she explained that she recently had to put Tammy down because she was having health issues including respiratory failure and kidney failure.

"It's so sad, but I'm just so happy that she had somebody to love her for two years," Handler said. "And she added to my life more than I probably added to hers."

"I will never be able to say how much value dogs bring to your life," Handler told fans. "So please go rescue a dog."

"Dogs give you something you never knew was missing," Handler wrote on Instagram after Tammy passed away, adding,  "I love you, bear. Thanks for being such a girl. I will get another dog that needs a home and it will remind me every day how much I miss you."

Handler has another dog named Chunk, whom she also adopted from a pound. Both he and Tammy have appeared frequently on the set of the comedian's Netflix talk show Chelsea.

Others clearly agreed with Handler's sentiment, as her video message has received more than 17,000 likes. Fans were inspired by her story to share photos of their own rescue pets. Actress Connie Britton also retweeted the video and added that she "couldn't say it better about my 2 rescues!"

For Saturday's third annual Clear the Shelters event, in partnership with NBC and Telemundo, shelters around the country discounted or waived adoption fees to encourage people to give more animals loving homes — just like Handler did for Tammy.
