Chelsea Handler's Life Advice On Jealousy May Make You Rethink Your Approach To Success

"I never, ever blow out someone else's candle to make mine brighter."

Comedian, actress, and author Chelsea Handler recently sat down with Elle magazine to talk about her early days in standup and the lessons she's learned from it.

When Handler was about 25 years old and living in Los Angeles, she attended a comedy showcase for an agency with fellow comedian friends. At that time, she had been doing standup for about five years, she tells Elle.

Meanwhile, Handler invited a friend, who had only been doing standup for about a year, to show off her skills alongside the rest of the group. Evidently, her friend got a call from the agency while Handler did not — despite the fact that she had been working much longer in the industry.

Immediately, Handler felt jealousy towards her friend and, consequently, guilty for even feeling that way. So after a conversation with her sister, Handler learned some extremely important life advice that has stuck with her to this day. Now, she's sharing it with us.

And though the advice applies to Handler's life in ways differently than it would to ours, the advice is still relatable and applicable to everyone on a mission to achieve their goals.

The advice was as follows:

"That's a natural feeling. You can't stop yourself from feeling that way. And you've told me, so you've told someone [and] you don't need to tell anyone else. You just can't ever act on jealousy. But you have to understand that what you have is completely different than what [your] friend [has]. What you have no one else has, so there will be a place for you. Don't think that because someone got something that you're not going to get something else. There's room for everybody."

Hearing this, Handler realized that though it's easy to react poorly to other's success, there's something beautiful worth remembering:

"There's always a space for you because there is no one that's exactly like you. I never, ever blow out someone else's candle to make mine brighter."
