Why Charlize Theron Doesn't Want You To Call Her Movie Weight Gain 'Brave'

"It’s hard when somebody’s like, 'Wow, that’s really brave!' "

In her new movie Tully, Charlize Theron plays an overworked mom of three who hires a night nanny. The actress gained 50 pounds for the role and has said that it took her a year and a half to lose the weight after filming.

Theron previously gained weight for the 2003 film Monster, a role which earned her an Academy Award. Although she has called the more recent process "brutal," she objects to the idea that her weight gain was "brave" in any way, pointing out that real-life mothers do it all the time.

"I know a lot of moms who feel like (crap) because it takes that long and everybody's expecting them to be back," Theron told USA Today. "Me gaining weight for the movie — it's hard when somebody's like, 'Wow, that's really brave!' Moms do this all the time and we don't call them brave. We're like, 'Why are you still carrying that baby weight?' "

Some of Theron's fellow actresses, including Anne Hathaway, have spoken out about the pressure to lose baby weight immediately after giving birth. As Hathaway wrote on Instagram, "There is no shame if it takes longer than you think it will to lose the weight (if you want to lose it at all)."

Hathaway also recently posted that she, like Theron, was in the process of gaining weight for a role, and she preemptively called out body shamers by writing, "To all the people who are going to fat shame me in the upcoming months, it's not me, it's you."

Theron is also a mother, having adopted her son Jackson and daughter August. She told Stephen Colbert that director Jason Reitman sent her the script for Tully, written by Diablo Cody, when her daughter was 6 months old. She praised the film for honestly depicting "how messy it is to raise kids," adding that it made her "not feel so alone," and hopes it does the same for other parents.
