How Chadwick Boseman Honored Hero James Shaw Jr. At The MTV Movie & TV Awards

"This is gonna live at your house."

It's no surprise that Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman won the Best Hero award at the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards, as his performance as the Wakandan superhero has inspired many. However, Boseman chose to use his moment on stage to honor a real-life hero — James Shaw Jr.

In April, Shaw disarmed a gunman in a Tennessee Waffle House and later raised money for the shooting victims' families. Shaw was in the audience at the awards but didn't seem to know what Boseman had planned for his win.

"Receiving an award for playing a superhero is amazing, but it's even greater to acknowledge the heroes that we have in real life. So I just want to acknowledge somebody that's here today." The crowd applauded Shaw as he joined Boseman on stage.

"This is gonna live at your house," Boseman told Shaw, handing him the golden popcorn award. According to Mashable, Shaw then gave the Wakandan salute on stage.

Shaw later posted about the experience on Instagram, writing, "Thank you @mtv for the invite, and the tremendous love you all showed me, it was greatly appreciated."

During the event, which aired on Monday night, Black Panther also won the awards for Best Movie, Best Villain (Michael B. Jordan), and Best Performance in a Movie (Boseman).
