Cara Delevingne Gets Catcalled In A Jimmy Choo Ad And The Internet Isn't Buying It

"Wow. Tone deaf."

The past year has seen an upheaval of women speaking out against and standing up to powerful men in regards to sexual misconduct — so seeing a major fashion brand release an ad that features men catcalling a woman is just not going to fly. That's exactly what happened with a recent Jimmy Choo clip, starring model Cara Delevingne, that has got the internet up in arms.


Folks on social media are calling the ad "sexist" and "tone deaf" for featuring Delevingne getting catcalled by men as she walks down the street in New York City. Wearing a sparkly red mini dress — paired with a pair of sparkly shoes, obviously — Delevingne is minding her own business while strutting to get a hotdog on the way out for a night of clubbing.

The problem comes at the attention men are paying this attractive woman who is simply walking past. "Nice shoes, lady," one guys says after whistling at Delevingne. Delevingne doesn't respond and simply keeps on going, paying the catcaller no attention except a brief half-smile.

In the wake of Harvey Weinstein and every other man who has seen their reputation come crashing down in the wake of the #MeToo movement, it's odd to see an ad portray a woman like this. Also, given the fact that Delevingne has come forward with a Weinstein story of her own, people are wondering why she agreed to take part in this ad in particular.

After all, catcalling is still a serious issue many women face in their day-to-day lives, getting unwanted attention from men. It's more than men innocently giving compliments, it's the fact that publicly and repeatedly doing this makes women feel unsafe or harassed and can often turn violent, leading to rape or even femicide.

While there are obviously some on social media who are just bashing the ad, there are many who are pointing out why it is being received so negatively and trying to educate others on just how serious an issue catcalling is. Here are just a few of those reactions:

We don't believe Jimmy Choo or Delevingne — neither of whom have responded to the controversy yet — meant any malice with this ad, it's just misguided. Hopefully, by listening to critics of the ad, everyone can use it as an educational moment.
