Listen To A Cancer Survivor's Heartfelt Open Letter To Joe Biden

"Groups like the Biden Cancer Initiative are precisely what make recoveries like mine possible."

Given his decades of public service, it's safe to assume Joe Biden has been thanked numerous times for all he's done to improve the lives of individuals throughout this country. However, we have a feeling a touching missive from a man named Craig Stephenson will be especially meaningful to the former vice president.

In a video on, Stephenson recalls how, in May of 2014 at just 29 years old, he was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Now two years into remission, Stephenson was compelled to write a letter to Biden in which he thanked him for everything he's done to eradicate cancer.

"Groups like the Biden Cancer Initiative are precisely what make recoveries like mine possible," Stephenson wrote. "More importantly, as my wife and I await the arrival of our first child, I have hope that she will never have to endure the heartache of losing a loved one prematurely to cancer."

Though the heartache Stephenson referenced is something his family was able to avoid, it's a pain the Bidens know all too well. In 2015, Joe Biden's eldest son, Beau, died after battling brain cancer. Beau's death is part of what dove Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, to establish the Biden Cancer Initiative earlier this year, and cancer research is just one of the important causes Biden has continued to champion since leaving the White House.

According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 1,685,210 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the United States in 2016, and 595,690 people died from the disease. What the Biden Cancer Initiative and other organizations like it strive to do is continue the fight to make progress in cancer prevention, detection, treatment, and care.

If Stephenson's letter is any indication, the BCI (and Biden's dedication to it) have helped him immensely. "For all that you have given, and for the continued hope that you engender in me and countless others, from the bottom of my heart, thank you," he concluded.
