These People Survived Their Suicide Attempts And Have Something To Say To Those Dealing With Depression

"Everyone is worthy of life."

About once every 13 minutes, an American will commit suicide.

Living with depression can be an incredibly isolating experience, particularly when it is severe enough for someone to contemplate ending their life. A new video from BuzzFeed raises awareness on this important topic by asking suicide attempt survivors to do something incredibly brave: talk about their journey.

"I started questioning my sexuality, I started hurting myself," explained Dese'Rae Stage, founder of survivor support network Live Through This. "I got myself into an emotionally and physically volatile relationship. That, coupled with all of the things that have been happening in my mind for so many years, kind of got to a breaking point."

For each person in the video, the pain stems from a different place. Troubled homes. Weight. Bullying.

"My weight is something that I've always struggled with and because of my weight, I always just kind of felt like I was never enough," said one survivor. "I just felt like because this was something I couldn't control, that I was just worthless."

The sentiment of despair was echoed in each testimonial. Their journeys were difficult, but thankfully, they survived.

Through their individual healing processes, the survivors were empowered by others who had been in a similar position. They are now paying it forward by speaking out in order to help those still gripped by depression and experiencing suicidal thoughts.

"Whatever you're going through is stronger than you think. You know, it can really have you on another level. The people who are trying to help you, let them in. I know it's going to be hard and difficult, but just let them in."
