8 Times Boston Counter-Protesters Demonstrated The City's True Character

Amid a heavy police presence and a heavily restrictive permit that included a ban on backpacks and anything that could be used as a weapon, a group of self-proclaimed "free speech" activists gathered in Boston today as planned despite calls to reschedule the event after a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville lead to the death of one individual last weekend.

What didn't go as organizers planned was the thousands of counter-protesters who also showed up and dwarfed their gathering.

An estimated 30,000-40,000 people filled the grounds outside the security buffer zone surrounding the free speech rally, including a group who had participated in a Black Lives Matter-led march from Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center to Boston Common, as reported by CBS News. Carrying signs that read "No Trump. No KKK. No racist USA" and "Hate Has No Home In Boston," counter-protesters continued to cheer long after the Boston Police Department tweeted the free speech rally had ended.

In a post-rally new conference, Boston Police Commissioner William Evans confirmed that 27 people had been arrested, mostly for disorderly conduct, but commended the "99.9 percent" of protesters who were "here for the right reasons." Below, check out our favorite moments from the protest that helped illustrate that those "right reasons" are ones we can all get behind.

1. This re-examination of what belongs at a protest.

2. These witches ready to cast some well-intentioned spells.

3. This honest sign about whose demands they're willing to meet.

4. This counter-protester who can have his cake and eat it, too.

5. This woman who doesn't let politics stop her from being a good person.

6. This serious 'Game of Thrones' burn.

7. This equally epic 'Black Mirror' burn.

8. This reminder of the only time Boston tolerates hate.
