American Bishop Quotes Martin Luther King, Jr. In Powerful Royal Wedding Speech

"Love is the only way."

The American Bishop who spoke at the royal wedding between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry captured the world's attention Saturday with an impassioned sermon given during the service at St. George's Castle in England. Bishop Michael Curry's animated and at moments quippy style has some online calling him the standout of the ceremony. Bishop Curry focused mostly on the power of love during his address, and bookended his speech with quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr.

"The late Dr. Martin Luther King once said, and I quote: we must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love, and when we do that we will make of this old world a new world. For love is the only way," Bishop Curry began.

Bishop Curry, who is the first Black presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, was invited to speak at the ceremony by the couple. In the past, he has spoken out about social justice, immigration policy and marriage equality, and in his sermon referenced how love helped keep hope alive for slaves in America.

"If you don't believe me, well, there were some old slaves in America's antebellum south who explained the dynamic power of love and why it has the power to transform," he said. "They explained it this way. They sang a spiritual, even in the midst of their captivity, it's one that says there's a balm in Gilead. A healing balm, something that can make things right."

Bishop Curry's sermon been praised by many online for its content and also its noticeable difference from the traditional stoicism that accompanies royal events. The lengthy address was recognized by many as more in the tradition of Black churches in America than the Church of England.

Before joking that he better wrap up because "we gotta get you all married!", Bishop Curry noted the power of love to overcome differences and bring communities together.

"When love is the way, we will lay down our swords and shields down, down by the riverside to study war no more," Bishop Curry said. "When love is the way, there's plenty good room, plenty good room, for all of God's children. Because when love is the way, we actually treat each other, well, like we are actually family."
