Bill Nye Uses Science To Stand Up For Women's Reproductive Rights

"I think you should leave it to women."

Legislation regarding women's reproductive rights should be based on facts, not feelings. For some, this charged topic has the potential to overshadow the truth based on emotion, and Bill Nye the Science Guy is through putting up with it. He explained his position in a new video for Big Think, aptly titled "Can We Stop Telling Women What To Do With Their Bodies?"

For those most vehemently opposed to progressive reproductive laws, it's done on the deeply-held belief that life begins when a man's sperm fertilizes an egg. The trouble with this line of thinking, Nye explains, is that it is completely incorrect.

Eggs get fertilized far more often than they actually implant in the uterine wall and develop full term. The reason that so many do is to increase the chances that one will take.

However, he notes another scary truth about the discussion: women are largely absent from policy-making. This adds another dimension to the broken way this topic is being decided.

"You cannot help but notice," he said, "I mean, I am not the first guy to observe this. You have a lot of men from European descent passing these extraordinary laws based on ignorance."

He cites that he understands that people are making these decisions based on religious beliefs, but that does not necessarily mean they are based on actual facts.

"It's hard not to get frustrated with this, everybody," he admits. "Nobody likes abortion, okay? But you can't tell somebody what to do. She has rights over this."
