Teachers And Medical Staff Are Now Highest Paid Civil Servants In Bhutan

The announcement is being praised worldwide.

Teachers, doctors, nurses and medical staff became the highest paid civil servants in Bhutan after the prime minister announced a pay raise.

The move is being praised internationally for prioritizing the work of critical civil servants who are often underpaid in western countries. The Bhutanese newspaper called it a "huge move" and said the country overhauling a civil servant hierarchy that often left administrators with the best perks and pay.

"If the pay revision comes through as proposed by the government, teaching becomes the highest paid profession in the country," the Prime Minister's office said.

8,679 teachers and 4,000 members of various medical staffs will benefit from the pay hike.
