In 4th Grade, He Made A Promise To His Best Friend. Years Later, He Kept It.

The Greek tragedian Aeschylus once wrote that "It is not the oath that makes us believe the man, but the man the oath." The observation is less about the nature of promises and those who make them than it is about the very nature of integrity, which in this case, might be defined as the correspondence between what one says and what one actually does.

Ben Moser has integrity.

Although you may have guessed that this a story about prom, we think it's much more than that.

This story, posted to Imgur (then later deleted) is about a promise made and kept. It is a story about integrity, about the simplest kind of heroism: being a loyal and stalwart friend. That kind of integrity, as you're about to see, transcends "prom season." It goes beyond time. It surpasses and endures distance.

It is something to be treasured.

This is Ben Moser and Mary Lapkowicz. They met in 2nd grade.

Mary has Down Syndrome. When Ben noticed she seemed to be left out, he reached out to her. They became friends.

One of their teachers, Trace Spogli, remembers their bond.

"He watched over her constantly," Spogli told PennLive. "If she was looking like she wasn't having fun, he would go over and talk to her. He would pull her in to whatever activity they were doing. He just always watched out for her."

When they were in 4th grade, Ben made a promise to Mary that when they got to high school, he'd take her to prom.

In 6th grade, however, they ended up at different schools.

The two friends lost touch...

Although he was the star quarterback on his high school football team, Ben Moser did not forget his promise. Meanwhile, coincidentally, Mary was her high school football team's equipment manager. When their teams met on the field, Mary and Ben happened across each other for the first time in years...

And Ben remembered his friend...

And he kept his promise.
