Mattel Unveils New Career Doll, And She Represents A Step In The Right Direction

Only 24 percent of people in STEM fields are women.

Barbie has had a lot of interesting careers during her time. In fact, she has had 200 careers in her 60-year history, including being a nurse, a beekeeper, a tennis coach, a cupcake chef, and a builder.

Her latest career is part of Barbie's #YouCanBeAnything campaign and it's meant to inspire girls to take on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers. As Mattel pointed out in its Instagram announcement for the doll, only 24 percent of people in STEM careers are female.

So Mattel's latest career Barbie is ... drum roll, please ...

The Robotics Engineer Barbie.

In Barbie's continued effort to promote diversity, there are four versions of the Robotics Engineer Barbie. All of them wear the same outfit and come with safety glasses, a laptop, and a robot. They have individual looks with different skin tones, hairstyles, and colors.

The doll is meant to highlight what exactly a robotics engineer does and show young girls it's a future career possibility. On the Barbie website, it says,  "With the Robotics Engineer doll, girls can imagine building robots and designing for the future."

And the company is giving girls the tools to do that. As part of the launch, Barbie has teamed up with Tynker to inspire more female coders.

Tynker is a computer platform and the goal is to introduce kids to coding through fun, easy-to-follow lessons that are free.

People reported that Krishna Vedati, Tynker co-founder and CEO, said, "Our mission is to empower youth to become the makers of tomorrow through coding, and the Barbie brand is an ideal partner to help us introduce programming to a large number of kids in a fun, engaging way."

The launch comes on the heels of Barbie releasing 17 dolls inspired by female role models including Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and artist Frida Kahlo.
