This Is What Finding Love Looks Like When You Have Autism

"Aspie Seeks Love"

David Matthews is a 49-year-old man from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, published author and full-time office worker. He also has Asperger syndrome, a disorder on the autism spectrum, and five years ago, desperately wanted to find love.

Enter filmmaker Julie Sokolow. Between 2011 and 2013, Sokolow filmed, interviewed and edited footage that documents Matthews' quest for love while living with autism and its effects on dating.

"One day out of the blue, I received a Facebook message from him saying, 'I've seen your documentaries and I think you should make one about me,'" she told A Plus in an email interview. "The fact that he had been looking for love for so long and was still hopeful was something I could relate to."

And "Aspie Seeks Love" was born.

The film follows the then-45-year-old single man with autism trying to find love just three years after an official Asperger diagnosis. After living his whole life as "different," becoming part of the "Aspie" family gave him the confidence to let others in.

"The diagnosis made David more confident that his social difficulties had a neurological basis and were not self-willed," Sokolow said.

She captures him finding courage to go on dates with women, and how he interacts with them all the while learning how to read facial expressions and understand boundaries. Like any love story, there's heartbreak and triumphs, which Matthews deeply explores throughout the film.

"Finding love is a challenge for most people, not just people on the spectrum," said Sokolow. "He says things that a lot of us think, but don't say out loud."

It may have taken most of Mathews' life to be ready to find love, but he definitely makes up for lost time.

As Matthews explains in the film, it's all about "being comfortable with who you are and who you want to be in the future."

So, does this Aspie find his love? You'll have to watch the film and see.
