In Lieu Of Wedding Gifts, Amy Schumer Suggests Donating To A Cause Close To Her Heart

"No gifts but thank you for asking."

Actress and comedian Amy Schumer surprised fans on Thursday by revealing she's a newlywed. She posted a series of Instagram photos from her recent wedding to chef Chris Fischer, and had a timely request for those offering congratulatory gifts.

In an Instagram post after revealing the wedding, Schumer first shut down rumors that she's pregnant, then added, "And no gifts but thank you for asking." Instead, the 36-year-old encouraged people to donate to the organization Everytown for Gun Safety, which advocates for an end to gun violence.

It's a timely issue, as news of Schumer's nuptials came just a day after 17 people were killed in a school shooting in Parkland, Fla. But it's also an issue that's especially close to Schumer's heart, as two women (Mayci Breaux and Jillian Johnson) were killed in a 2015 shooting at a showing of Schumer's movie Trainwreck in Lafayette, La.

Schumer mentioned those victims in her Instagram statement, writing that she was thinking of them through the recent news and was "sending love to everyone who has been affected by gun violence."

Since that 2015 shooting, Schumer has been outspoken about ending gun violence in the United States. She teamed up with her cousin, Sen. Chuck Schumer, to tackle the issue shortly after the Lafayette shooting, and even interviewed an advocate from Everytown on her show Inside Amy Schumer in a 2016 episode, which also featured a sketch on the topic.

"These shootings have got to stop. I don't know how else to say it," the comedian said in a 2015 press conference with Sen. Schumer.

As the Huffington Post notes, Everytown was formed after the tragic 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in which 20 children and six adults were killed. Schumer also promoted the organization on Wednesday after news of the Parkland shooting broke, posting an Instagram image reading, "We don't have to live like this. We don't have to die like this."
