Amy Newmark Discusses Why Now Is The Perfect Time To 'Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone'

"By accident, a lot of us sort of fall into a rut."

Stuck in a rut? Try stepping out of your comfort zone.

That's the advice and inspiration of a new book from Amy Newmark, the editor-in-chief and publisher of Chicken Soup for the Soul. Chicken Soup, a parent company of A Plus, recently published Chicken Soup for the Soul: Step Outside Your Comfort Zone, a series of short stories about people who left the mundane patterns of their day-to-day.

"By accident, a lot of us sort of fall into a rut," Newmark said in an interview with A Plus' Claire Peltier. "We don't even do something like go shop at a different grocery store. We go to the one where we know where everything is, which is just silly."

Newmark cautions that stepping out of your comfort zone doesn't have to be something big such as moving across the country. It can be as simple as going to a new movie theater. Even better, though, it's an exercise people of all ages can partake in. The first step, Newmark says, is looking at yourself and asking if you've stopped doing new things.

"If you realize, 'Yeah, I'm in a rut,' then do something small to start with. Then you'll find that you'll be excited, you'll be proud of yourself and you'll keep going."
