This 'American Idol' Hopeful Sang A Katy Perry Song In Front Of Katy Perry. Did It Work?

"I Kissed a Girl" like you've never heard it before.

It's already nerve-racking to audition for American Idol in the first place, let alone sing one of the celebrity judges songs in front of them. That's exactly what Caitlin Lucia did when she took her moment in the spotlight to sing Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" in front of Katy Perry herself.

The season 16 hopeful came in with a rattle on one foot and a resonator guitar (or resophonic guitar) in tow, telling Perry that she is one of her biggest influences and that they have a connection as they both got started out performing at L.A.'s Hotel Café. When it came to what song she would be singing, Lucia said her pick was a cover of Perry's breakthrough 2008 hit.

During the 22-year-old California native's performance, we see Perry's face go from skeptical to impressed — clearly blown away by what Lucia is doing. When it's over, the 33-year-old pop star says that she usually hopes that people who sing her songs do at least as good as or better than she can — and in this case Lucia even "sang it better." This is obviously a moment of relief for Lucia, who says she thought Perry was going to eat her alive.

"No, no, no. I think you did," Perry assured Lucia. "You actually gave it a really incredible, original spin. I think you've got a bigger motor than you're showing us, though."

Perry's fellow judges agreed and also heaped on their praises. Lionel Richie said he thinks Lucia is just "cruising along, touching the top" and that there's a whole other level she can take it to while Luke Bryan complimented Lucia on having "complete control" of her voice.

The best moment, though, had to have been when Perry told Lucia — who got all three yeses from the judges, by the way — that she should come and sing at one of her shows, to which the up-and-coming talent responded just like anyone else would: "Hell yeah!"
