Akon Working On Bringing Solar Power And Clean Energy To 600 Million Africans

The ever evolving entrepreneur.

This summer, Akon is gearing up to help bring clean energy to Africa.

This is part of his ongoing #AkonLightingAfrica initiative, which was founded two years ago

The group is aiming to help Africa harness their 320 days of sunshine and turn that into usable energy.

According to Reuters, this will help nearly 600 million Africans receive clean energy.

However, it isn't just about bringing energy to Africa. It's about teaching Africans how to install solar panels and, more importantly, how to build them.

The institution will be opening up this summer in Bamako, Mali.

"We expect the Africans who graduate from this center to devise new, innovative, technical solutions," said Thione Niang, who co-founded Akon Lighting Africa along with Akon and Samba Baithily.

Akon, who is of Senegalese descent, made the announcement at the Sustainable Energy For All forum, in New York, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The new academy will be built in partnership with Akon's company SOLEKTRA, which according to the website, "is one of the new generation of African companies investing in economic growth and employment in Africa."

Through his partnership with SE4ALL, the groups hope to raise $1 trillion by 2030 to make their goals possible.

The addition of the Akon Lighting Africa group to SE4ALL is a step in the right direction.

They have already helped 90 million people receive energy and hope to increase their investments from other "public-private partnerships," according to SE4ALL.org.

To get things started, Akon explained, they first invested their own money.

As stated in WSJ, "We go in, plead our case to the country, put up pilots with our own dollars using sophisticated equipment and we make sure we do the installation right. It shows people that we're not coming in to pull money out of the country, we're there to provide jobs for the locals and to enable them to feed their families."
