Airbnb's New Super Bowl Ad Sends A Timely Message Of Acceptance

"The world is more beautiful the more you accept."

Even though, according to the New York Times, brands are discouraged from using their Super Bowl ad time "for viewpoint or advocacy of controversial issues," several of this year's spots managed to send some powerful messages. Budweiser, for example, celebrated its immigrant roots, while Kia promoted environmental heroism

While neither of these ads made specific reference to the Trump administration, they still proved to be incredibly timely. However, perhaps the most timely 30 seconds of the night came from Airbnb. According to CEO Brian Chesky, the company bought the ad time Thursday morning and filmed the spot Thursday night, with Airbnb employees starring.

The brand recently spoke out against Donald Trump's executive order banning refugees and citizens of seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the United States. Chesky tweeted that Airbnb would provide free housing to anyone not allowed into the country. "Let's all find ways to connect people, not separate them," he wrote.

Sunday night's Super Bowl ad reiterated that sentiment. The clip features a group of people from diverse backgrounds photographed close-up. Then a split screen makes two or more faces appear as one, highlighting our shared humanity. It's a simple premise that sends a big message.

"We believe no matter who you are, where you're from, who you love, or who you worship, we all belong," the ad declares. "The world is more beautiful the more you accept." It ends with the hashtag #weaccept.

It's all part of Airbnb's new mission to provide housing to 100,000 displaced people over the next five years, as well as contribute $4 million over four years to the International Rescue Committee. You can learn more about the initiative on its website, including its dedication to preventing discrimination among its guests.
