Barbara Pierce Bush To Give Keynote Address At Planned Parenthood Fundraiser

The former first daughter has devoted her life to global health issues.

Barbara Pierce Bush, the daughter of former president George W. Bush, will headline a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas in Fort Worth on March 1.

Bush has publicly praised the nonprofit, including calling it an "exceptional organization" in the New York Times, and her own international NGO, Global Health Corps, partners with Planned Parenthood clinics in several countries.

Bush will give the keynote address at the Planned Parenthood chapter's annual fundraising luncheon, The Texas Tribune reports. Her appearance is considered surprising by some, as her father opposed abortion while he was in office, but the procedure is only a fraction of the services Planned Parenthood provides to millions around the country each year.

Since leaving the White House, Bush worked with the Red Cross and UNICEF before founding Global Health Corps with five others in 2009. According to the organization's site, the nonprofit is run on the belief that "health is a human right and that their generation must build the world where this is realized."
