6 Easy Home Improvement Projects You Can Do Yourself

They're cheap, too.

Home improvement can feel like a pretty overwhelming project and that's a natural feeling. Once you move into a house, it's astounding how much stuff you need to fill it up, and even more overwhelming once you realize how much upkeep an entire structure like that requires. Improving your home after moving in doesn't have to be such a daunting task, though — just do one thing at a time, stay consistent and watch your house (and its value) grow significantly.

Even if it's just something as small as painting a door or installing some wall shelves, committing to an improvement project once a weekend or even once a month will have pretty dramatic effects on your house over time. If you've just spent a ton of money (in cash or on a loan) to buy a house, why not put a little effort into raising its value even higher and improving its comfort for yourself at the same time?

Of course, it's easy to want to stay away from too much home improvement both because you're worried you don't want to mess up and damage your house in any way and because you don't want to spend a ton of money on it. There are plenty of simple, cheap projects you can start with, though, and doing them will instill more confidence in your abilities.

Here are six quick and easy ones to get you started:

1. Plant a tree barrier

Plant some evergreen trees in a row on your lawn and in a couple years' time you'll have yourself a serious barrier.

2. Turn a closet into a desk space

Infinite possibilities. But you can start by innovating unneeded closet space with a desk. Learn how to do it here.

3. Install a new doorbell

Installing a new doorbell is easy and can spruce up your doorstep significantly.

4. Build a soap dispenser into the counter

Building a soap dispenser into the counter by the sink will make the area look very clean as well as thought out.

5. Get decorative stair brackets

Improve the look of your stairs with some stair brackets. It's super easy to do and they'll look great.

6. Elevate your lights with dimmers

Light dimmers are incredibly easy to install and can change the whole aesthetic of a room with just a slide of the button.

So there you have it. Maybe doing these things won't result in a literal cliff house or a $33 million home, but with the same attitude as this fixer-upper, you'll be on your way to a better home in no time.
